So you’ve chosen the cot or moses basket, read up on baby bedding options… what next? There is more to encouraging your new baby to sleep well than simply comfortable sleeping surroundings. Here are some other products to consider.

Nursery Thermometer

The optimum temperature for a nursery is about 18 degrees Celsius. A room thermometer will help you regulate this and give you an idea of how many blankets or what nightwear to use to keep your baby comfortable.

White Noise Cds

White noise or womb sound Cds remind your baby of being safe in their mother’s womb. Playing the CD can help them relax at nap time or bed time so they can settle themselves to sleep. The CD may also be effective for comforting the baby when he is crying.

Mobiles

Cot mobiles are a good sleep aid because they help establish a night time routine - when they hear the familiar tune they know it is time to go to sleep. The soft music and lights can also be soothing. If your baby is starting off in a moses basket, place the moses basket inside the cot at night so they can benefit from a mobile.

Consider what functions are of most use to you. For example, some mobiles will automatically switch off after 10 minutes so parents will not have to do this manually and risk disturbing their baby.

Cat net

Pets and babies should never be left together without being supervised. For extra peace of mind a cat net can be bought for cots, prams and moses baskets to protect the baby while they are sleeping.
