Moses basket liner
"Moses basket liner" refers to the part of the bedding which covers the basket itself. Its purpose is to cover the wicker basket to make it safer and more comfortable for baby, and because it can be removed and washed it helps keep your baby's sleeping area more hygienic.
Where can you buy a moses basket liner only?
Moses basket liners are typically only available as part of a moses basket covers set. At the very least these sets include a liner and hood, and often come with a duvet too. If you have already read our article on moses basket covers then you will know that these sets are not widely available, and liners only are even harder to come by. Most peoples' first port of call when buying baby bedding are the big retailers such as Mothercare and Babies R' Us but these do not stock spare moses basket liners. At present, the best place to buy them online is eBay. Prices for a padded liner start at around £8 plus postage. Amazon also occasionally stock them, through third party sellers.
Since most moses baskets are of a similar size, a generic moses basket liner is likely to fit reasonably well. However, it is worth checking the dimensions of your basket and contacting the seller first to check compatibility.
Can you make your own moses basket liner?
Making your own moses basket liner is relatively easy for anyone with basic sewing skills and access to a sewing machine. There are a couple good tutorials online:

Creating your own is a brilliant way to get exactly what you want, as well ensuring that the liner has a snug fit.
What else will I need to replace in a second hand moses basket?
It is not essential to replace the liner in a second hand moses basket unless it seems soiled or has mould from being poorly stored. However, it is highly recommended by the FSID (Foundation of Study of Infant Death) that you replace the moses basket mattress. This is because a number of studies have highlighted a risk between newborns sleeping on a second hand mattress and a risk of cot death. This link is less significant if the previous occupant of the moses basket was a sibling, but the risk factor still exists.
There are no associated risks with other second hand baby bedding and it is up to parental discretion as to whether they wish to replace other items such as fitted sheets.
