Moses basket coverlet
A lot of moses basket cover sets come with a "coverlet". This is a decorative quilt that is the equivalent to using a sheet with one layer of blanket.
But can you use a quilt for babies under one year?
Many parents are confused about the inclusion of a coverlet since experts advise against using a quilt as baby bedding for infants under one year, because they can cause overheating and increase the risk of cot death. However, the coverlet is much more lightweight than a normal quilt and has less padding, making it suitable for use by young babies. However, you should always check the packaging because many manufacturers err on the side of caution and do not recommend that you use them for babies who weigh under 8lbs.
Will I still need to purchase additional moses basket bedding?
Yes. In fact a significant number of parents chose not to use the coverlet at all, instead preferring to use their own chosen blankets or baby sleeping bags. But even if you do use the coverlet you will need spare blankets for when the coverlet is being washed and additional bedding for very cold or very warm nights. The coverlet is sufficient covering for a baby in a moderately warm room, but should not be used at all on warmer nights as your baby will need no more than a sheet. On cold nights, extra blankets will be required to keep your baby cosy. As a guide, this is how much bedding will need according to the temperature of the room where they are sleeping:
| Very warm room |
24 C / 75 degrees F or higher |
One sheet |
| Moderately warm room |
18 C/ 65 degrees F to 21 C/ 70 degrees F |
One sheet plus one or two layers of blanket |
| Cool room |
Under 18C/65 degrees F |
One sheet plus three layers of blanket |
