Choosing Your Baby’s Comforter
Many babies will one day adopt a comfort object, as parents it can make your life easier if you can influence what that object is! Here are some helpful tips to consider:
Do not choose something bulky, with loose fibres or anything that could be detached. The comforter should be the only toy in your baby’s moses basket or cot during the early months for safety reasons.
Choose a comforter made from cotton or towelling which retains scents. A big part of a baby’s attachment to its comforter is the familiar smell.
Before you give the comforter to your newborn, sleep with it in your bed for a few nights to imprint it with the scent of mummy and daddy. This will help the baby form an attachment and make him feel secure when placed down to sleep with his comforter.
Buy two! A baby or toddler losing their comforter can be stressful for all involved so it is good to have a spare. You may also want to be able to swap the two over so they can be washed - comfort objects can get very grubby!
If you don’t want the expense of buying two, at least make a note of the manufacturer and where you bought it in case it gets lost.
Choose wisely and your child will have a much loved toy that will bring them security and reassurance until they feel comfortable exploring the big wide world!
